There are many situations which have difficulties because of English. When I went to starbucks, I ordered a frappuccino. I have ordered that in Japan, so I didn't worry anything. But the staff said something to me before I pay that like "ooo?" I told the order and my name as well. So I didn't have any idea but just nodded. I couldn't know what she said at that time. At next visit, I finally got it. I couldn't hear that clearly again. But I heard like "ooip?" And when I received the frappuccino, I realized. That was "whip?"! They asked me "Do you want whip on the frappuccio?"! Do ask like that, please...! I know it's easier to say just a word, but more difficult for me to get it..! I haven't been asked about whip in Japan, so I didn't have any idea. If I had, I might be able to understand at the first visit. I have many experiences like that I said yes despite I didn't understand. Because asking to say again or ...

Our speech situation for pragmatics project was restaurant. We researched about greeting and conversation in restaurant. We chose this topic because this is very common situation to live in Hawaii and we can use some after our research. There are many kind of restaurant here, from much expensive one to students familiar one. To research conversation in expensive restaurant was hard for us because we don't money enough to go to that kind of restaurant for this research. So I went to a restaurant like I can eat hamburger, not so expensive but with services. I knew some phrases there from other's conversations. However, I felt it is difficult to take notes on the table. So I typed some in my phone at that time and enjoyed my eating. After my visiting the restaurant, I looked for other phrases on many other situations like in expensive one by asking some native speakers and on the internet. This pragmatics resea...

On Monday this week, I had a presentation with my partner. Our topic was greeting in China and in Japan. I was so nervous before the presentation. The last night, I practiced speaking that I prepared for the presentation. However, I have a roommate and she sleeps early. So I couldn't practice in loud voice which is needed in presentation speech. That made me more nervous. In the presentation, thanks to my partner, the beginning went well. I felt relaxed a little bit then. In my part, I forgot some of sentences which I prepared. Because of one mistake of timing I push PC's button, I lost my pace of speech. I felt frustrated a little after the presentation due to the off my stride. However, I think our presentation was not bad. We forgot to set out timer to keep our pace in 6 - 8 mins, but that seems close to 7 mins, we felt. I wanted to practice more and that was required to avoid nervous. I realized the importance of practicing again. By searching about ...

Aloha! I'm going to write about my experience in my class. I'm taking ELI, economics, social science, and Hawaiian studies classes. As you all do, I have to take note in the classes. I usually write down key words and lines on notebook and use many pages in a class. However, when saw some students note during class one day, They were writing sentences on their note or laptop and it spent a short space. I wondered how I could take notes with sentences. I have never done like that even in Japanese. In the last listening class, we leaned about the ways to take a note finally. I found the writing sentences as one way and the homework was taking note with one way of them. So I decided to do the sentence way. In Hawaiian studies class, I tried to take notes with sentences. At first, I could do it but soon, I couldn't follow the class. I concentrated to writing what the professor said and became unable to listen well. As the result I missed many important points and asked oth...

I went to North Shore with my roommate on Sunday. We visited Haleiwa town (Matsumoto's shave ice!!), Sunset beach, and Banzai pipeline. They were so beautiful and we took a lot of pictures of the ocean. It took about 2 hours from our dorm because we went by bus. However, I'm so satisfied with the trip! I'll go again sometime soon though! We had lunch at vegan restaurant, the beet box cafe. This was my first time to visit vegan cafe. I've never seen vegan before. I think Japanese can't be vegan because lots of Japanese dishes need fish, meet, egg, and many other food from animal. For example, sushi needs raw fish, and dashi which is required for almost Japanese cuisine like udon is from bonitos. So Vegan is a kind of culture shock for me. At the restaurant, I ordered "BEIRUT BURGER." It used "falafel" which is a deep fried patty made from ground chickpeas, fava beans, or both (from wikipedia:p). The burger was so tasty! ...
